Ultimate Day for the Beer Lover

From dawn to dusk, the best brews in Durango.

24-Hour Durango Itinerary for the Beer Lover

As told by Patrick Jose at Carver Brewing Company

Years ago, Durango made waves as one of the first destinations in Colorado for craft beers. Today, five breweries are on offer in the certified beer town. We sat down with Patrick Jose, the head brewmaster at Carver Brewing Company, one of Durango’s most beloved breweries, to ask him to craft the perfect day for a beer lover in Durango.

Breakfast at Carver Brewing Company

Jose suggests kicking off your day at his own spot--and not just because he’s biased. Carver’s prides itself on being one of the only breweries to offer a truly great breakfast. “I’d start my day with breakfast at Carver’s. The Deluxe Bloody Mary comes with a light lager, which is a great combo,” he says, adding, “Carver’s is the classic American pub, but we set ourselves apart by serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We make our own nitro coffee, cold brew style, and our own root beer.”

Steamworks Brewing

Next, Jose recommends a visit to Steamworks Brewing Company, another award-winning Durango brewery. He suggests bringing along a crowd! “Steamworks is the place to go if you have a bunch of friends in town,” he says. “They have a large menu that appeals to everyone, with everything from Cajun boil to burgers. I love their Third Eye Pale Ale, it’s a real staple there.”

Lunch at BREW Pub & Kitchen

Time for lunch! BREW Pub & Kitchen has made a name for itself as a haven for local foods and artisanal dishes, says Jose: “BREW is a modern brewpub. Very small batch, limited releases of everything. Eric’s been in this town making beer for decades.”

Ska Brewing

In the afternoon, hit up a tour of Ska Brewing, Jose recommends: “You can try everything they make right there. The Mod Brewery is their experimental brewery, and if it sticks, it goes in a can.”

Dinner at Cantera

For dinner, Jose likes the creative Mexican cuisine on Main at Cantera: “Cantera has really set itself apart in the area for Mexican food. Where else can you get goat on a menu?”

Cocktails at El Moro

For a change of pace (and before you sleep it off!), cap off the night with craft cocktails at El Moro Tavern in steampunk-inspired digs. Jose praises their impeccable drinks and dedication to creativity: “I’d recommend El Moro for designer cocktails. They make all their ingredients in-house. They take their time, and it shows.”
